Travel Notes: Swiss Monastery

A pilgrimage of sorts.

I am not religious (unless you count flowers), but I grew up Catholic and sometimes miss its rituals.

I also love beer.

This week I stayed at a monastery/hotel/brewery about an hour outside Zürich — Kloster Fischingen. These days I am working through a massive grief and craved the retreat and comforts of such a place. It also happened to be on the Switzerland portion (!) of the Camino to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Photography is my meditation, and I imagined taking photos of the grounds — only to realize at the train station on the way there that… I forgot my camera! It would be a monastic stay indeed. Of course I had my iPhone, so I’ve just spent some time editing these photos into submission, as I used to do years ago.

Here are some simple snaps from the short trip. It was very nice and I have a new favorite Swiss beer.

That bottle of beer reminds me of Duvel beer.
Great photos architecture captured perfectly in that minimalist arc and void space.

Thank you! Interesting observation — Duvel is also a historically (currently?) monastery brew, so that might be traditional bottle for that style. Thanks for sending me down a bottle design rabbithole later today…

In addition to the flagship Duvel, the brewery produces several other beers, including Maredsous Blonde, Maredsous Brune, and Maredsous Triple (all under license from Maredsous Abbey)
Wow never knew it was on licence from the abbey.
